Warehouse 13 Farnsworth Tablet Sleeve

Difficulty: Easy              ★★☆☆☆

Materials you will need:

  • The template
  • Felt in red, gold, dark brown, white and black
  • Embroidery floss (dark brown or gold will look best)
  • Scissors
  • Tape/glue
  • A sewing needle
  • Heat n Bond (highly recommended but you could also use fabric glue or hot glue)
  • An iron
  • A padded surface for ironing
  • A marking tool (pen/pencil/chalk for darker fabrics)
  • Pins (optional)

This template was originally designed to fit a tablet 9.5" x 7.3" but will fit most tablets comfortably. It can be easily modified to fit your personal tablet size, just make sure the template is 1" larger in height and width (for a 9" x 7" tablet you'll want a 10" x 8" template)

The first thing you're going to need to do is print out the template which can be downloaded here.

Once you have the template printed out, cut out the two pages. Then line up the two pieces and tape or glue them together.

Take your dark brown felt and trace the full rectangle template onto it. Cut out the rectangle then do the same thing using your gold felt. You should have 1 brown and 1 gold rectangle for the main body of the tablet sleeve.

Apply Heat n Bond to the black, red and white felt according to manufacture's directions. Using your template, trace the Farnsworth's details onto the correct colour of felt. If you flip your template printed side down and trace the shapes on the backside, it will transfer some of the ink onto the Heat n Bond paper. (If you're not using Heat n Bond, trace the shapes onto the correct colour of felt.)

Once you have all of your shapes traced, cut them out.

It's now time to add the details to the gold rectangle. First peel off the paper backing, place shapes using the template as your guide and iron shapes to adhere them. Work on 1 shape at a time for best results. Let fabric cool before moving on to the next steps.

Take your embroidery floss (all 6 strands), cut off a generous amount and thread it through a large eyed sewing needle, double knotting one end. Using a blanket stitch, start at a corner on one of the shorter ends of the brown felt and stitch across the short side to the other corner. This is going to be the top of the backside of the sleeve.

Next, pin the front of the sleeve to the back, right sides out. Make sure the finished end of the back is at the top of the Farnsworth. Continue the blanket stitch through both layers, sewing the sleeve together. Continue around all 3 sides until you reach the top on the opposite side. Sew across the front side of the sleeve separately (don't sew the front and back together at the top) finishing off the top of the sleeve.

Now you have your finished Farnsworth tablet sleeve!
